The Eastern Michigan Eagles and UMass Minutemen face off on Wednesday in a Week 3 college football showdown at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. UMass has won the lwo games played against Eastern Michigan in their history.
Eastern Michigan opened up their season with a victory over St Francis before losing their last game against Wisconsin. Eastern Michigan’s defense actually wasn’t terrible in the last game with their defense, but the offense could only manage four points, and that came in the 4th quarter. The Eagles have used two quarterbacks under center each of the first two games, and they will probably continue that in this game. In the first game, Ben Bryant threw for 126 yards while Preston Hutchinson threw for 63 yards. In this game, Eastern Michigan needs the offense to be good, and put the pressure on UMass to keep up.
On the other side of this matchup is UMass who have struggled to start the season. UMass opened up their season with a loss against Pittsburgh 51-7 and in the last game against Boston College they lost 45-28. Under center for UMass is Brady Olson and in the last game he completed 14 of his 29 passes for 214 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. UMass is giving up 48 points per game and the offense hasn’t scored a point in the first quarter yet this season. If UMass wants to come away with a victory, the offense is going to need to get out to a faster start.
Eastern Michigan is 23-7 against the spread in their last 30 games on the road. UMass is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games played following a straight-up loss. The over is 6-0 in Eastern Michigan’s last six against Independents. The over is 4-0 in UMass’s four against the MAC. The over is 8-2 in Eastern Michigan’s last ten road games.
Eastern Michigan has found success covering spreads on the road, but that is usually as the favorite. I don’t love Eastern Michigan’s two-quarterback system and I don’t think they are going to find enough success with the offense to win this game in blowout fashion. Eastern Michigan will win but UMass will cover the spread.
