The Arizona State Sun Devils and BYU Cougars face off on Saturday in a Week 3 college football showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Arizona State leads the all-time series 20-7.
The Arizona State Sun Devils have looked good to start the season, but this is their first real test. The Sun Devils opened up the season with a victory over Southern Utah 41-14, and followed that up with a 37-10 victory over UNLV. Arizona State is led by quarterback Jayden Daniels and in the last game, he threw for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. McDaniels a dual-threat and also rushed for 122 yards on 13 carries. The defense at times has given up some big plays and against a better offense, they are going to need to be a lot better on that side of the ball.
On the other side of this matchup is the BYU Cougars who have wins over Arizona and Utah already this season, so they should have a lot of confidence heading into this game. BYU’s offense hasn’ been as good as Arizona State’s but they have also been more tested. BYU is averaging 25 points while their defense is giving up 17 points. Jaren Hall has taken over for Zach Wilson and in the last game he completed 18 of his 30 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Allgeier is the best player in the backfield and he had 27 rushes for 97 yards.
Arizona State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four road games. BYU is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games as the underdog. The under is 5-1 in Arizona State’s last six games in September. The under is 5-0 in BYU’s last five games overall. The under is 11-2 in BYU”s last 13 games against the Pac-12.
BYU doesn’t want to get into a shootout, and I expect even against Arizona State, their defense is going to find success. I also expect Hall is going to regress a bit for BYU and that will lead o a lower scoring game. The trends all point towards an under, and that will be the winning bet in this game.
