The Utah Utes and BYU Cougars face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium. These two teams last faced off in August of 2019 and Utah will win 30-12.
The Utah Utes opened up their season with a layup going against Weber State. Utah did give up 17 points which they can’t be very happy about, but Utah was still able to win 40-17. Charlie Brewer is the starter for Utah and in Game 1 he completed 19 of his 27 passes for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The star back is Tavion Thomas finishing with 12 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Dalton Kincaid had four catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
On the other side of this matchup is the BYU Cougars who opened up their season with a 24-16 victory over the Arizona Wildcats. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 0-0 but BYU used a big second quarter scoring 14 points to pace them to a victory. Under center for BYU is Jaren Hall and he completed 18 of his 28 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Tyler Allgeier had a strong game on the ground rushing 17 times for 94 yards and a touchdown. One area this BYU team needs to improve is with the defense. The Cougars gave up 345 yards through the air. If BYU wants to find success, they need to slow down the Utes offense.
Utah is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games on the road. BYU is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games against the Pac-12. The over is 4-0 in the Utes last four games overall. The under is 6-2 in BYU’s last eight home games. The underdog is 7-3 against the spread in the last ten meetings played between the two teams.
BYU’s defense isn’t good but they have proven that they have a good offense. Utah’s defense wasn’t elite against Weber State, and BYU is going to attack them. BYU might not pull the upset, but they will cover the spread.
