UNLV faces Arizona State on Saturday, September 11th, at Sun Devil Stadium for a Week 2 college football matchup.
UNLV lost its first game of the season to Eastern Washington at home in double OT, 35-33. Although this was an FBS team (UNLV) going down to an FCS team (Eastern Washington) it was not a true upset as Eastern Washington ended up as the favorite by two points. UNLV was projected to finish in last place in the Mountain West this season as was expected. UNLV did not win a game last season in its 0-6 2020 campaign and is 2-12 in its last 14 conference games in the Mountain West. UNLV was absolutely torched in the passing game in its Week 1 loss, allowing 374 passing yards in the game. UNLV was strong against the run, only allowing 97 rushing yards in a game that went past regulation time. UNLV's quarterback Doug Brumfield completed five of 12 passing attempts for 117 yards and one interception.
Arizona State is currently ranked #23 in the country and was able to take down the FCS' Southern Utah, 41-14 in its first game of the season. Arizona State was not able to cover the spread in its win as the Sun Devils were 44.5-point favorites in that one. Arizona State is a large favorite yet again in Week 2 against UNLV and for good reason. Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels was not too busy in the passing game in the win over Southern Utah, only completing 10 of 12 passes for 132 passing yards. The Arizona State rushing committee (which includes Daniels) ran for 222 yards on 40 attempts for 5.6 yards per carry and six rushing touchdowns.
Arizona State is a 34.5-point favorite and the total is set at 54. I like the over here as I could see Arizona State scoring 50 points alone in this one. UNLV's offense should be able to find a few scores just as Southern Utah did against Arizona State last week. This total is far too low considering how bad the UNLV defense was against Eastern Washington and has been in its last five games dating back to last season. I will take the over.
