The Tulsa Golden Hurricane and Oklahoma State Cowboys face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Boone Pickens Stadium. These two teams faced off last year and it was Oklahoma State that came away with the 16-7 victory.
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane couldn’t have gotten out to a worse start to the season. Tulsa faced off with FCS level UC Davis, and it was an ugly one as Tulsa was defeated 19-7. Tulsa didn’t score any points in the 4th quarter and that was the difference as they were defeated. Under center for Tulsa was Davis Brin who threw for 201 yards but he also threw for a couple of touchdowns. Tulsa is a run-first team, and Deneric Prince had a strong game rushing for 151 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. On defense, Tulsa allowed 311 yards and a touchdown through the air.
On the other side of this matchup is the Oklahoma State Cowboys who have some questions heading into this game, most importantly who will be under center. Starting quarterback Spencer Sanders missed the opening game of the season while in the COVID protocol and it’s unclear if he will be able to go in this game. Oklahoma State opened up their season against FCS level Missouri State, and they were almost upset. The offense could only manage 23 points and they only won by seven points. Under center for Oklahoma State was Shane Illingworth who threw for 315 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. One issue was Oklahoma State had issues getting the running game going.
Tulsa is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games overall. Oklahoma State is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games played in September. The under is 10-1 in the Golden Hurricane’s last 11 games in September. The under is 6-2 in Oklahoma State’s last eight home games. The favorite is 4-1 in the last five meetings played between the two teams.
I don’t think it matters who starts under center for Oklahoma State, they are going to have no issue getting the job done in this one. Tulsa’s passing defense is awful, and Oklahoma State is going to air it out. Tulsa’s offense isn’t going to keep up, and Oklahoma State will cover the spread.
