The Temple Owls and Akron Zips face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at InfoCision Stadium. Temple leads the all time series 14-7 and the Owls have won five games in a row.
The Temple Owls have some major questions this season, and the first game didn’t seem to answer any of those. Temple opened up against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and they struggled on both sides of the ball, but especially wit the defense as they gave up 61 points. Temple gave up at least 12 points in each of the four quarters, and in his game the defense is going to need to be a lot better. On offense, Temple managed only two touchdowns. D’Wan Mathis completed only eight of his 24 passes for 148 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Edward Saydee finished with 12 catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side of this matchup is the Akron Zips who have struggled the last few years, and they got this season off to a bad start losing to the Auburn Tigers 60-10. At the end of three quarters. Akron had zero points, but they did manage to get a touchdown and a field goal in the last quarter. Kato Nelson and DJ Irons both played under center against Auburn, and it’s unclear who will get the start in this game. DJ Irons did find more success completing 13 of his 13 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. This is an offense that has had issues moving the ball, and in this game, they need to find some offense, because their defense probably won’t be shutting out Temple.
Temple is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall. Akron is 16-35 against the spread in their last 51 home games. Akron is 0-5 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
Akron’s offense is so bad, and there is no reason to believe that is going to change in this game. I expect the quarterback position to be an issue again, for Akron. Temple will only finish around 21 points and the under will cash. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings played between Akron and Temple.
