The South Carolina Gamecocks will travel to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium to take on the East Carolina Pirates this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0) kicked off their 2021 season with a victory after defeating the FCS Eastern Illinois Panthers, 46-0, this past Saturday. South Carolina made quick work of Eastern Illinois and had no trouble securing the victory after going into halftime with a 29-0 lead. South Carolina outgained Eastern Illinois by a 443-109 margin while also winning the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Offensively, South Carolina was led by QB Zeb Noland who completed 13 of 22 passes for 121 yards & 4 TD’s. RB ZaQuandre White had an impressive game as he finished with 128 rushing yards & 1 TD on just 12 carries while also leading the Gamecocks in receiving with 39 yards & 1 TD on 4 receptions. Also contributing to the South Carolina passing game was Josh Vann (2 rec, 27 yards, TD), Nick Muse (2 rec, 15 yards, TD), & Jaheim Bell (2 rec, 11 yards, TD).
Defensively, South Carolina held Eastern Carolina to just 9 first downs while holding the Eastern Carolina rushing attack to just 31 yards on 22 carries (1.4 yds/carry). Leading the way for the Gamecocks defense was Brad Johnson (2 tacks, 1 sack, 2 TFL) & Jordan Burch who had a pick-six.
The East Carolina Pirates dropped to 0-1 on the season after being defeated in their season opener by the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 33-19, this past Saturday. East Carolina got out to a quick start, taking an early 7-0 lead on a 63-yard TD pass by Holton Ahlers, however, the defense struggled slowing the Mountaineers offensive attack and could not fight back after Appalachian State took a 27-9 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. East Carolina was outgained by Appalachian State by a 485-381 margin while also losing the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Offensively, East Carolina was led by Holton Ahlers who completed 22 of 40 passes for 295 yards, 2 TD, & 1 INT. RB Keaton Mitchell led the Pirates in both rushing & receiving as he has 50 yards on 4 carries while also hauling in 79 yards & 1 TD on 5 receptions. Also contributing to the East Carolina passing attack were Rahjai Harris (4 rec, 56 yards), Jsi Hatfield (3 rec, 51 yards), & Ryan Jones (1 rec, 38 yards, TD).
Defensively, East Carolina struggled to slow down the Appalachian State rushing attack as both Nate Noel & Camerun Peoples had over 100 yards rushing for the Mountaineers. Leading the way for the Pirates defense was D’Marco Jackson (8 tackles, 1 TFL), Nick Hampton (6 tackles, 1 sack), & Brendan Harrington (4 tackles, 2 sacks).
The Gamecocks are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 September games, however, are just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Pirates are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their
South Carolina got off to a solid start to their season, however, it’s important not to read into it too much as this is still a very similar team that finished 2-8 last season while allowing an average of 36.0 ppg. East Carolina has some talent, especially on the offensive end in QB Holton Ahlers, and has shown that they can put up some points after averaging over 30.0 ppg last season. I’m expecting to see plenty of offense in this one as South Carolina should be able to have plenty of success on the ground vs. the Pirates while East Carolina will be able to attack a South Carolina defense that ranked just 119th in passing defense last year, and I think the clear play here is to go with the over. Good Luck!
