The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Syracuse Orange face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at the Carrier Dome. These two teams have faced off 42 times before with Syracuse winning 29 of them. Rutgers however has won the last two games against the Orange.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights opened up their series against the Temple Owls and it was a dominating victory as the home team came away with the 61-14 victory. Rutgers at halftime was up 26-7 and in the second half the offense was even more impressive. Under center for Rutgers is Noah Vedral and in the last game, he threw for 138 yards and a touchdown. Vedral also was strong on the ground, rushing eight times for 58 yards. Isaiah Pacheco also rushed 15 times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Temple’s defense was also strong and even the yards they did give up were mostly in the second half.
On the other side of this matchup is the Syracuse Orange who opened up their season on the road against the Ohio Bobcats, and they had a pretty comfortable victory winning 29-9. At halftime, Syracuse was only up 12-6, but in the second half they pulled away. The Orange used the running game to their advantage led by Sean Tucker who rushed 25 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Tommy Devito completed 11 of his 17 passes for 92 yards. He also rushed for another 49 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Syracuse played well giving up 212 yards through the air and 134 yards on the ground.
Rutgers is 5-0 against the spread in their last five road games. Syracuse is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games. The under is 7-0 in Rutgers last seven games against the ACC. The over is 6-2 in Syracuse’s last eight home games. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings played between the two teams. The favorite is 5-2 in the last seven meetings between Rutgers and Syracuse.
Syracuse looked good in their first game, but I don’t think their defense is as good as the nine points given up in the first game appears. Syracuse still gave up plenty of yards, and Rutgers offense is going to take advantage. I expect Sean Tucker is going to have a big game on the ground, and he will help pace the Scarlet Knights to a cover of the spread.
