The Pitt Panthers and Tennessee Volunteers face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Neyland Stadium. These two teams faced off twice before, and Pitt came away with the two victories.
The Pitt Panthers opened up their season against the UMass Minutemen and it was a dominating victory for the home team. Pitt’s offense was strong, scoring 51 points, and the defense didn’t give up any points until the 4th quarter. Under center for Pitt is Kenny Pickett and he threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns in the first game. Pitt uses a running back by committee with five different players putting up 30 yards. Pitt’s offense wasn’t consistent at times, and it’s going to be important that the offense is strong early and puts the pressure on Tennessee.
On the other side of this matchup is the Tennessee Volunteers who opened up their season against the Bowling Green Falcons, a team they were able to beat 38-6. Former Michigan Wolverines quarterback Joe Milton is the starter and he threw for 139 yards and a touchdown. The real strength of the offense in the first game was the running game. Tiyon Evans rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown and Jabari Small finished with 117 yards and a touchdown. Even though Tennessee gave up only six points, the defense did have a little issue with the passing defense giving up 187 yards.
Pitt is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games overall. Tennessee is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games against the ACC. The over is 8-1 in Pitt’s last nine games overall. The over is 5-0 in Tennessee’s last five against the ACC. The under is 10-11 in Tennessee’s last 11 home games.
Pitt’s offense was impressive in the first game, but I still don’t trust their offense after how they looked last season. Tennessee has a strong running game let by Evans and Small, and both players are going to be strong in this game. Look for Tennessee to keep this game close and cover the spread.
