North Texas faces SMU on Saturday, September 11th, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium for a Week 2 college football matchup.
North Texas defeated Northwestern State in its first game of the season in Week 1. North Texas was a 20-point favorite in that game, therefore the Mean Green were able to cover in the win as well. North Texas's DeAndre Torrey had a game to remember as he ran 25 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Northwestern State could not stop Torrey as he ran for almost 10 yards per carry and torched the Northwestern State defense all night long. North Texas quarterback Jace Ruder completed 10 of 21 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Defensively, North Texas allowed 261 rushing yards in the win, which is something that has to be worked on before this game and conference play. North Texas made it to a bowl game last season against App State but was defeated in blowout fashion by the final score of 56-28.
SMU is in a bit of a rebuild this season as it does have to replace its star quarterback from a year ago, Shane Buechele. SMU's Tanner Mordecai went off in his first game as the starter against Abilene Christian, throwing 24/30 for 317 passing yards and a whopping seven passing touchdown. Mordecai was efficient all night long in SMU's 56-9 victory over the Southland's ACU. SMU was also able to cover the spread in its win, as the Mustangs were laying 32 points in that contest. Overall, the SMU offense did not skip a beat from last season despite only facing an FCS team. Now, SMU gets the chance to face the Conference-USA's North Texas in which should be an offensive shootout.
SMU is a 22.5-point favorite and the total is set at 73. We have a very steep total in this one and for good reason. For years now, both of these programs have been able to put up points but the defense has been more of an afterthought. I am going to take the over here, as I could see SMU putting up 45+ points and North Texas is going to do a lot of damage on the ground as well. I expect plenty of big-play touchdowns here and I will take the over.
