NC State faces Mississippi State on Saturday, September 11th, at Davis Wade Stadium for a Week 2 college football matchup.
NC State is coming off a 45-0 dominating win over USF in its first game of the season at home. NC State was tenacious on both sides of the ball and was able to easily cover the 19-point spread in the win as well. NC State ran for almost 300 rushing yards in the win and still was able to add 232 passing yards from quarterback Devin Leary as well. NC State has one of the tougher schedules in the ACC this season as the Wolfpack have to face Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina as well as another Power 5 team in this matchup with Mississippi State. NC State has won four of its last five games dating back to last season and will look to start the season with a 2-0 record in nonconference play.
Mississippi State struggled a bit in its first game against Louisiana Tech but was able to find a win by the final score of 35-34. Mississippi State was a 20.5-point favorite in the game, therefore the Bulldogs were not even close to covering the spread. It looked as if Mississippi State was going to be upset in the game, as Louisiana Tech held a 34-14 lead with a little more than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Mississippi State was able to find three touchdowns in the late going to eke out the win and start the year with a 1-0 record. Mississippi State turned the ball over a whopping six times in the win, as five fumbles were lost by Mississippi State and one interception was thrown by Will Rogers. I expect Mississippi State to be a lot less sloppy in this one as holding onto the football will be the #1 focus in this week's practices.
NC State is a 2.5-point favorite and the total is set at 55.5. I was not necessarily impressed by how NC State quarterback Devin Leary looked against USF. I think Mississippi State is going to be able to put a lot more pressure on him than USF did in Week 1, and that could be the difference in this one. Mississippi State has a powerful offense led by a pass-first head coach and quarterback in Will Rogers. I will take the home dog here in Mississippi State as I think we see a lot sharper of a performance.
