The Miami of Ohio Redhawks and Minnesota Golden Gophers face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Huntington Bank Stadium. The last time these two teams faced off was in 2018 and Minnesota came away with the 26-3 victory in that game.
The Miami Redhawks faced off with the Cincinnati Bearcats in their first game of the season and it didn’t go as planned. At halftime, the Redhawks were down 35-0 and it didn’t get a whole lot better in the second half as Miami of Ohio was defeated 49-14. The biggest issue was clearly with the defense in the first game. Miami allowed 295 yards through the air, and over 230 yards on the ground. On offense, Miami was led at quarterback by AJ Meyer who completed nine of his 28 passes for 109 yards. On the ground, running back Keyon Mozee was one of the bright spots rushing 15 times for 80 yards. In this game, the offense is going to need to be a whole lot better.
On the other side of this matchup is the Minnesota Golden Gophers who were competitive in their first game of the season against the Ohio State Buckeyes but they didn’t have enough in the second half to comeback. The Gophers defense did give up 35 points in the second half. Quarterback Tanner Morgan did look impressive for Minnesota throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown, Wide receiver Dylan Wright also looks like the real deal after catching five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. One big problem for the Gophers is that running back Mo Ibrahim, one of the best backs in the country, did go down with a season-ending injury. Players like Treyson Potts, Cam Wiley, and Bryce Williams are all players who are going to need to step up in his absence.
Miami of Ohio is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games following a straight-up loss. Minnesota is 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four games overall. The over is 4-1 in the Redhawks last five games against the Big Ten.
The Redhawks defense looked terrible against Cincinnati, and it’s not going to magically improve in this game. Morgan and Wright are both going to have big games for the Gophers, and they will cruise to the victory. Back Minnesota to win the game and cover the spread.
