The Memphis Tigers will travel to Centennial Bank Stadium to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Memphis Tigers kicked off their 2021 season win winning fashion after defeating the FCS Nicholls Colonels, 42-17, this past Saturday. Memphis allowed Nicholls to jump out to a quick 7-0 lead, however, the Tigers dominated the rest of the way and had no trouble pulling away for the victory after going into halftime with a 29-7 lead. Memphis outgained Nicholls by a 587-299 margin while also winning the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin. Offensively, Memphis was led by the RB trio of Brandon Thomas (16 car, 147 yards, TD), Rodrigues Clark (9 car, 84 yards, TD), & Asa Martin (13 car, 65 yards). QB Seth Henigan completed 19 of 32 passes for 265 yards & 1 TD. Leading the way for the Memphis receivers were Javon Ivory (5 rec, 106 yards), Gabriel Rogers (3 rec, 59 yards), & Calvin Austin III (6 rec, 47 yards, TD).
Defensively, Memphis allowed Nicholls to have some success in their passing attack, however, was outstanding against the run, holding the Colonels to just 100 yards on 28 carries (3.6 yds/carry). Leading the way for the Tigers defense was JJ Russell (7 tackles), Cole Mashburn (5 tackles, 1 TFL), & Sylvonta Oliver (2 tackles, 1 INT).
The Arkansas State Red Wolves improved to 1-0 on the season after defeating the Central Arkansas Bears, 40-21, this past Saturday. Arkansas State trailed by a 7-6 margin at halftime, however, the Red Wolves dominated Central Arkansas in the 2nd half and pulled away after a 33-yard TD reception by Corey Rucker gave Arkansas State a 33-17 lead early in the 4th quarter. Arkansas State outgained Central Arkansas by a 513-338 margin while also winning the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Offensively, Arkansas State was led by WR Corey Rucker who had 138 receiving yards & 3 TD’s on 9 receptions. Starting QB James Blackman completed 16 of 26 passes for 169 yards, however, was replaced by backup QB Layne Hatcher who went a perfect 12 for 12 for 150 yards & 4 TD’s. The other top receiving threats outside of Corey Rucker were Te’Vailance Hunt (6 rec, 96 yards, TD) & Jeff Forman (5 rec, 55 yards). Leading the way for the Red Wolves backfield was Alan Lamar who had 67 rushing yards & 1 TD on 18 carries.
Defensively, Arkansas State struggled a bit against the Central Arkansas passing attack despite forcing two INT’s, however, the Red Wolves were outstanding against the rush, holding the Bears to just 42 yards on 20 carries. Leading the way for the Red Wolves defense was Jarius Reimonenq (6 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 PD), Kivon Bennett (4 tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFL), & Samy Johnson (4 tackles, 1 INT).
The Tigers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games, however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Red Wolves are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 September games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.
Memphis had a huge question mark coming into the season with who was going to replace QB Brady White, however, the Tigers must be happy with the results they got from Seth Henigan last week. Arkansas State has some talent at the QB position, however, this is still a team that looked lost in the 1st half against Central Arkansas and is coming off a season in which the defense ranked just 111th in scoring defense & 126th in passing defense. Memphis is not as explosive on the offensive end as we’ve seen in recent years, however, the Tigers do have what I feel is an underrated defense and as I think the Tigers offense will have some success against the Red Wolves in this one, I think the play here is to take Memphis to cover. Good Luck!
