The Liberty Flames will travel to Veterans Memorial Stadium (AL) to take on the Troy Trojans this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Liberty Flames had no trouble opening their 2021 season in winning fashion after defeating the Campbell Fighting Camels, 48-7, this past Saturday. Liberty dominated Campbell on both ends of the field throughout the game and had no trouble securing the victory after going into halftime with a 20-7 lead. Liberty outgained Campbell by a 537-269 margin and didn’t commit a single turnover in the victory. Offensively, Liberty was led by QB Malik Willis who completed 15 of 23 passes for 217 yards & 1 TD while also rushing for 55 yards & 1 TD on 5 carries. The top receiving threats for Willis and the Flames were Demario Douglas (7 rec, 84 yards, TD), DJ Stubbs (3 rec, 68 yards), & Jaivian Lofton (3 rec, 51 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Liberty backfield was the trio of Joshua Mack (19 car, 60 yards, TD), Shedro Louis (3 rec, 46 yards, TD), & T.J. Green (7 rec, 39 yards).
Defensively, Liberty was solid against the Campbell rushing attack as they held the Fighting Camels to just 86 rushing yards on 29 carries (3.0 yds/carry). Leading the way for the Liberty defense was Javon Scruggs (7 tackles, 1 PD), Gregg Storey (6 tackles), & Skyler Thomas (5 tackles, 2 TFL).
The Troy Trojans improved to 1-0 on the season after having no trouble defeating the Southern Jaguars, 55-3, this past Saturday. Troy dominated from the opening whistle against Southern and had no trouble cruising to victory in the 2nd half after going into halftime with a 34-3 lead. Troy outgained Southern by a 467-189 margin while also won the turnover battle by a 4-2 margin in the victory. Offensively, Troy was led by QB Taylor Powell who completed 17 of 28 passes for 234 yards, 2 TD, & 1 INT while also rushing for a TD. The top receiving threats for Powell and the Trojans were Tez Johnson (5 rec, 92 yards, TD), Luke Whittemore (3 rec, 52 yards), & Deshon Stoudemire (2 rec, 35 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Troy backfield was the trio of Kimani Vidal (15 car, 81 yards, 1 TD), B.J. Smith (10 car, 54 yards, 1 TD), & Jamontez Woods (13 car, 28 yards, 2 TD).
Defensively, Troy did a phenomenal job against the Southern rushing attack, holding the Jaguars to just 81 rushing yards on 28 carries. Leading the way for the Trojans defense was Zion Williams (2 INT), Will Choloh (5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL), & Jayden McDonald (2 tackles, 1 INT).
The Flames are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 23-8 ATS in their last 31 road games. The Trojans are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games in September, however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
Both teams are coming off impressive wins to start their 2021 season, but make no mistake, Liberty is the far superior team in this one. Liberty put themselves on the map last season with an offense that ranked 16th in scoring offense and should be equally explosive with Malik Willis back under center for the Flames. Troy is a decent sub-belt team, however, this is a team that just seems to lose close games and can struggle with turnovers. Liberty’s offense gets a lot of recognition, however, their defense is also outstanding as I think they will be able to limit the Troy offensive attack, I think the Flames do enough in this one to cover this small road spread. Good Luck!
