The Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Jack Trice Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2019 it was Iowa that came away with the 18-17 victory.
The Iowa State Cyclones have high expectations coming into this season but if they want to meet those, they are going to need to play a whole lot better than they did in the first game. Iowa State fell behind early 7-3, but they were able to create just enough offense to come away with the 16-10 victory. Brock Purdy completed 21 of his 26 passes for 199 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Breece Hall had 23 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Even though they came away with the victory, the offense wasn’t that impressive scoring only 16 points, and the matchup is going to get only tougher in this game. Iowa State needs to do a better job of moving the ball.
On the other side of this matchup is the Iowa Hawkeyes who were impressive in their first game of the season against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hawkeyes scored 34 points, but they were gifted great field position by the defense all afternoon as they had three interceptions. Quarterback Spencer Petras completed 13 of his 27 passes for 145 yards, Tyler Goodson also had 19 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. In this game, if the defense can be strong again, Iowa is going to be able to pull the upset.
Iowa is 6-1-1 against the spread in their last eight games overall. Iowa State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games as a favorite. The under is 4-1-1 Iowa’s last six games against the Big 12. The under is 5-0 in Iowa State’s last five home games.
Both team's strength is the defense, and points are going to be very hard to come by in this game. Iowa State’s offense is going to have issues, with Iowa’s defense creating a few turnovers. Back the under. I also like Iowa to keep it close and cover the spread.
