The Georgia Southern Eagles will travel to FAU Stadium to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Georgia Southern Eagles opened their 2021 season in winning fashion after defeating the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, 30-25, this past Saturday. Georgia Southern held a 20-6 lead at halftime and was able to pull away late after an 8-yard TD run by Logan Wright gave the Eagles a 30-18 lead with 6:32 left in the 4th quarter. Georgia Southern outgained Gardner-Webb by a 500-427 margin and didn’t commit a turnover in the victory. Offensively, Georgia Southern was led by RB Logan Wright who had 177 rushing yards & 1 TD on 26 carries. RB’s Amare Jones (19 car, 98 yards) & Gerald Green (11 car, 72 yards) also contributed to the Eagles ground game. QB Cam Ransom completed 8 of 13 passes for 90 yards & 1 TD. The top receiving threats for Georgia Southern were Khaleb Hood (3 rec, 39 yards), Beau Johnson (3 rec, 25 yards), & Chase Hancock (1 rec, 17 yards).
Defensively, Georgia Southern struggled a bit slowing down the Gardner-Webb passing attack as the Bulldogs throw for 365 yards & 4 TD’s against the Eagles defense. Leading the way for the Georgia Southern defense was Anthony Wilson (6 tackles, 0.5 TFL), C.J. Wright (4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL), & Khadry Jackson (2 tackles, 1 sack).
The Florida Atlantic Owls dropped to 0-1 on the season after being defeated by the 13th ranked Florida Gators, 35-14, this past Saturday. Florida Atlantic had no answers on the defensive end for the Gators offensive attack and could not fight back after a Dameon Pierce 3-yard TD run gave Florida a 21-0 lead with 6:47 left in the 3rd quarter. Florida Atlantic was outgained by Florida by a 553-353 margin while each team committed 2 turnovers each. Offensively, Florida Atlantic was led by N’Kosi Perry who completed 19 of 33 passes for 261 yards & 1 TD. The top receiving threats for the Owls were D’Marcus Adams (2 rec, 85 yards), Brandon Robinson (4 rec, 60 yards, TD), John Mitchell (4 rec, 51 yards), & Lajohntay Wester (4 rec, 29 yards). Leading the way for the Florida Atlantic backfield was the duo of Johnny Ford (10 car, 52 yards, 1 TD) & Malcolm Davidson (9 car, 52 yards).
Defensively, Florida Atlantic could do nothing to stop the Florida rushing attack as they Gators piled up 400 rushing yards & 4 TD’s on 46 carries (8.7 yds/carry). Leading the way for the Florida Atlantic defense was Jordan Helm (11 tackles), Teja Young (10 tackles, 1 INT, 0.5 TFL), & Caliph Brice (10 tackles, 1 PD).
The Eagles are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Owls are 7-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Georgia State was able to pick up a win against the FCS Gardner-Webb Bulldogs and despite not having their starting QB, Justin Tomlin, who was ruled ineligible for the first two games of this season, still showed the ability to be able to run the football after finishing last season ranked 5th in CFB in rushing offense. Florida Atlantic is a better team than what we saw against a very good Florida team, however, it is a bit concerning that they allowed 400 rushing yards against the Gators. Florida Atlantic is the better team, however, as I think the Eagles will be able to control the clock and have some success on the ground in this one, I think Georgia Southern does enough in this one to keep it close and cover with the points. Good Luck!
