The Ball State Cardinals and Penn State Nittany Lions face off on Saturday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Beaver Stadium. This is the first meeting ever between the two teams.
The Ball State Cardinals got their season off to a fast start against Western Illinois winning 31-21. At halftime, Ball State was tied 7-7 but in the second half, they took off and cruised to the victory. Even though Ball State only gave up 21 points, the defense did have some issues giving up 367 yards through the air. On offense, Ball State is led at quarterback by Drew Plitt and he threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Ball State was led by Wil Jones who had 18 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown. If Ball State wants any chance to keep this game close, they are going to need the defense to be a lot better.
On the other side of this matchup is the Penn State Nittany Lions who were able to come away with a victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in the first game. There really wasn’t anything pretty about that game for the offense, but they made some big plays down the stretch to win 16-10. The most impressive part of that game for Penn State was the defense and the way they were able to force turnovers, including two interceptions. Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford completed 18 of his 33 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. One issue for Penn State was the lack of running game.
Ball State is 11-1 against the spread in their last 12 games against teams with a winning record. Penn State is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games against the MAC. The under is 8-2 in Ball State’s last 10 non-conference games. The over is 4-1-1 in Penn State’s last six home games.
Penn State’s defense has proven they are elite, and they are going to lock down in this game. I expect Penn State will score some points, but I don’t expect them to be getting to 35 or 40 points. Back the under to cash.
