The Kansas Jayhawks and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers face off on Friday in a Week 2 college football showdown at Brooks Stadium. These two teams faced off last year with Coastal Carolina coming away with the 38-23 victory.
The Kansas Jayhawks made a coaching change this offseason bringing in Lance Leipold and his era got started on the right foot, even if it was a bit ugly, Kansas opened up their season against FCS level South Dakota, and the Jayhawks were able to win 17-14. Kansas only managed 17 points, but that was all they needed as they held off a late charge from the Coyotes. Under center for Kansas is Jason Bean who threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns. For the last few years, it has seemed that Kansas can’t find a quarterback, but maybe they finally have their guy. The last time Kansas faced off with Coastal Carolina the defense struggled, and they need better defense in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers who opened up their season against The Citadel, and it was dominating from the start. Coastal Carolina put up 24 points in the second quarter and that paced them to a 52-14 victory. Grayson McCall is back under center for another season for the Chanticleers and in the first game he threw for 261 yards and a touchdown. Running back Shermari Jones also had a big game rushing nine times for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Coastal Carolina’s defense was also strong in the first game giving up only 14 points.
The Jayhawks are 20-42-1 against the spread in their last 63 games played on the road. The Jayhawks are 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 games overall. Coastal Carolina is 5-0-1 against the spread in their last six games on grass. The over is 9-2-1 in Kansas last 12 games overall. The over is 5-0 in Coastal Carolina’s last five games as a favorite.
I do believe Kansas is better this season, but they still aren’t the better team in this matchup. Coastal Carolina has a strong offense, and the Kansas offense isn’t going to be able to keep up. Coastal Carolina scored 52 points in Game 1 and in this game, I expect they will get close to 42 points. Back Coastal Carolina to win the game and cover the spread.
