The Notre Dame FIghting Irish and Florida State Seminoles face off on Sunday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish finished last year with a 10-2 record overall but this team looks a whole lot different. Last season the Fighting Irish averaged 33.4 points per game, and in this game they need that offense to be strong. There was some question earlier this offseason who would start under center, but Jack Coan will get that job after starting his college football career with the Wisconsin Badgers. During the 2019 season, Coan threw for 2,727 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. On defense last year, Notre Dame was strong giving up 19.7 points. If Notre Dame’s defense can create a few turnovers, they will be in good shape.
On the other side of this matchup is the Florida State Seminoles who are entering their second year with Mike Norvell in charge. During the 2020 season, Florida State finished with a 3-6 record, but there are higher expectations around the team this year. Florida State’s offense averaged over 25 points per game, but their offense was inconsistent, and they need to have a more balanced attack. Under center for Florida State will be Jordan Travis who completed 55 percent of his passes for 1,056 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions. Travis always seemed to have turnovers at the worst team, and that will On defense, Florida State gave up 36 points per game, and it was far too often that there were missed tackles that led to touchdowns.
Florida State is going to be better this season, but I don’t think they are going to be that much better to compete with Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish will attack the weak defense of the Florida State and this game will get out of hand early. Back Notre Dame to cover the spread.
