The Penn State Nittany Lions and Wisconsin Badgers face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Camp Randall Stadium. The last time these two teams faced off was in 2018 with Penn State coming away with the 22-10 victory.
Penn State has high expectations heading into the season as they look to bounce back from last year where they finished with a 4-5 record. The Nittany Lions started their season 0-5 before winning their last four games. Last season Penn State had a high powered offense finishing with 430 yards per game. The offense had turnover issues though averaging 1.9 per game. Under center is Sean Clifford who last year threw for 1883 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Clifford at times makes some questionable decisions, and he needs to clean up. On defense Penn State gave up 27.7 points and 130.4 yards per game on the ground. In this game, Penn State needs to stop the run on defense first if they want to come away with the victory.
Wisconsin finished last year with a 2-3 record averaging 25.1 points per game. Quarterback Graham Mertz completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 1238 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions.. Mertz was decent last year, but also inconsistent, and they need better play out of him this year. Wisconsin usually has a strong offensive line, but they got much younger heading into this season. Former Clemson Tigers running back Chez Mellusi has earned the starting job for the Badgers. On defense last year Wisconsin gave up 17.4 points per game which was ninth best in college football.
Penn State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall. The Badgers are 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall. The under is 8-2 in Penn State’s last 10 road games. The under is 4-1 in Wisconsin’s last five games overall. THe favorite is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings between Wisconsin and Penn State.
Penn State got out to a slow start last season, and it won’t be any different in this game. Wisconsin’s defense is going to be a strength again this season, and they will turnover Sean Clifford a few times. Look for Wisconsin to have enough offense to come away with a victory and a cover of the spread.
