The New Mexico State Aggies will head on the road to face the San Diego State Aztecs for some FBS college football action. The Aztecs won the last meeting 31-10 back in 2019.
The Aggies were limited to just two games during the spring season in 2020, this after a disappointing 2019 in which they went 2-10. They got right back to losing in their first game of the season, falling 30-3 at home to the UTEP Miners. Jonah Johnson got the start at QB and was just 8/24 for 82 yards, good for a QBR of 5.2. They managed to get 101 yards on the ground, led by Juwaun Price with 37 yards. Defensively they had a tough time stopping the UTEP attack, allowing 452 yards of total offense, 203 of those coming on the ground.
San Diego State is coming of a 4-4 season in 2020 and were led by a defense that ranked 11 in the nation with just 17.8 points allowed per game. They are solid are a solid all-around unit, with the secondary being the only potential weak point after losing CB Darren Hall to the NFL draft. On offense, senior Jordon Brookshire will get the nod at QB, looking to improve after completing just 56.8 percent of his passes a year ago. He was able to contribute on the ground, racking up 101 yards. The ground game was the strength of the offense, racking up 199.4 yards per game using a plethora of backs. Much of that unit is back again, led by senior Greg Bell.
New Mexico State is 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games, 1-9 on the money line, and the over is 5-5.
San Diego State is 6-4 ATS in their last 10 games, 6-4 on the money line, and the under is 7-2-1.
The Aggies did very little to show they have improved in the offseason after their first game, getting shut down by a UTEP defense that allowed 31 points per game in 2020. They were gashed on the ground and will face a potent Aztec attack. San Diego State’s defense is one of the better units in the nation, and there is a realistic possibility they earn a shutout in this one. Give me the Aztecs to cover.
