The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Mississippi State Bulldogs face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Davis Wade Stadium. These two teams last faced off in November of 2018 and it was Mississippi State that came away with the 45-3 victory.
Louisiana Tech was up and down last season but they managed to finish with a 5-5 record including 4-2 during Conference USA. They did enough to make the New Orleans Bowl, but they were embarrassed in that game losing 38-3. They actually struggled to move the ball overall, but they still found a way to average 27 points per game. It appears that they will be using two quarterbacks again this year with Luke Anthony and Aaron Allen both expected to get playing time. On defense. Louisiana Tech weren’t as good as they were expected to be, but they do get ten starters back. The linebackers are expected to be the strength of this team, and they will probably need to create a few turnovers in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Mississippi State Bulldogs who finished last year with a 4-7 record, and they are looking for a bounce-back this year. Mike Leach is still in charge of the Bulldogs, but the offense wasn’t close to good enough last year. Will Rogers and Chance Lovertich are still battling for the starting quarterback spot, and it’s unclear who will start, or if both guys will play. If Leach isn’t happy with the quarterback play, he will probably continue to switch between the two guys. On defense, Mississippi State’s stats didn’t look great, but they were put in a lot of bad positions because of the offense not moving the ball. The strength of this defense is the linebacker corps that is led by Erron Thompson.
Louisiana Tech is 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 games against the SEC. Mississippi State is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games overall. The under is 13-5 in Louisiana Tech’s last 18 road games. The under is 7-3 in Mississippi State’s last 10 games overall.
I don’t trust Mississippi State to get great quarterback play in this game. The home team is the much better team, but I don’t see them winning this game in blowout fashion. Look for Louisiana Tech to find enough offense against a bad Mississippi State defense, to cover the spread.
