The Indiana Hoosiers and the Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in a Week 1 College Football game at Kinnick Stadium. These two teams last faced off in 2018 and it was Iowa that came away with the 42-16 victory.
The Indiana Hoosiers had a lot of success during the 2020 season finishing with a 6-2 record overall, but there are some who wonder if last year was just a fluke. Indiana averaged 28.9 points per game and a big reason was the quarterback play. Michael Penix Jr threw for 1600 yards and 14 touchdowns. Last season, Indiana’s defense was a bit inconsistent, and he gave up 28.9 points per game. On defense, the best player is Micah McFadden who finished last year with 58 tackles. In this game, if Indiana wants to win the offense is going to need to find to take care of the ball.
On the other side of this matchup is the Iowa Hawkeyes who finished with a 6-2 record during the 2020 season. There are a lot of expectations for Iowa heading into this season, because the offense returns a lot of key players. Under center for Iowa is Spencer Petras who threw for 1500 yards and nine touchdowns. Running back Tyler Goodson is one of the best in the Big Ten, and Iowa will no doubt lean on him in this game. Goodson rushed 143 times for 762 yards and seven touchdowns. The defense during the 2020 season was strong giving up 16 points which were sixth-best in college football. One big loss for Iowa was Nick Niemann who went onto the NFL and his shoes are going to need to be filled.
Indiana is 5-0 against the spread in their last five road games. Iowa is 5-1-1 against the spread in their last seven games overall. The over is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings played between Indiana and Iowa. The favorite is 4-0 in the last four meetings played between Indiana and Iowa. The over is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Iowa.
Iowa’s defense is elite, and Indiana is going to have some real issues moving the ball. Tyler Goodison is going to be the x-factor for Iowa’s offense as they attack Indiana’s defense. Iowa is going to score at least 20 points and that will be enough for the Hawkeyes to cover this spread.
