The East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Vanderbilt Commodores face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Vanderbilt Stadium. These two teams faced off in 2019 and it was Vanderbilt that came away with the 38-0 victory.
The Vanderbilt Commodores had an awful 2020 season finishing with an 0-9 record overall and they struggled on both sides of the ball. Vanderbilt’s offense only managed 14.8 points per game while their defense gave up 37.3 points per game. This offseason Vanderbilt moved on from coach Derek Mason and brought in Clark Lea who was the offensive coordinator for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Vanderbilt has Ken Seals and Mike Wright who are both expected to play under center in this game. Both guys were decent last season, but they need to try and push the ball more downfield. On defense, Vanderbilt is young, and there will be some growing pains this season.
On the other side of this matchup is East Tennessee State who finished last year with a 4-2 record and they are hoping to build off of that. East Tennessee State are an FCS level team, and they know they are going to be tested in this game. Last season it was mostly the defense that led them to success, but if they want to win this game, they are going to need to have more explosive plays out of the offense. They are probably going to need to have a few lucky bounces to even keep this game close.
East Tennessee State is 0-4 against the spread in their last four games overall. Vanderbilt is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home game.s Vanderbilt is 7-15 against the spread in their last 22 games overall.
There are a lot better games on the board. I still think Vanderbilt will have some issues this season but the talent level of ETSU is much lower than Vanderbilt. Look for the Commodores to find enough offensive success to cover this spread.
