The Akron Zips and Auburn Tigers face off on Saturday in a Week 1 college football showdown at Jordan-Hare Stadium. These two teams last faced off in 1988 and it was Auburn that came away with a 42-0 victory.
The Akron Zips are probably in a make or break year for coach Tom Arth. Akron is coming off a 1-5 season last year, and that’s actually an improvement over Arth’s first couple of years in charge. Akron last season averaged 17.2 points per game while their defense is giving up 41.3 points per game. Akron have some major issues with their offense but it appears they are going to be starting Zach Gibson after he threw for 7000 yards and four touchdowns. Teon Dollard is also back in the backfield and he is coming off a year where he rushed for 600 yards and six touchdowns. On defense. Akron couldn’t slow down anyone last year, and if they want any chance they need to be better on that side of the ball.
On the other side of this matchup is the Auburn Tigers who made a coaching change bringing in Boise State coach Bryan Harsin to lead the squad. The good news for Harsin is he has a lot of good pieces to work with, but this season is going to come down to the play of Bo Nix. Last season Nix threw for 2,415 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Nix shows flashes of being a top quarterback in the SEC, but there is too often that he makes head-scratching plays that hurt the team. On defense, the best player for Auburn was Zakoby McClain and he is back for this season. In this game, if Auburn gives up more than seven points, it would be embarrassing.
Akron is 0-4 against the spread in their last four non-conference games. Auburn is 12-5 against the spread in their last 17 home games. The under is 35-16 in Akron’s last 51 games overall. The under is 8-2 in Auburn’s last ten games overall.
Akron’s offense isn’t going to score more than three points, and Auburn is going to run up the score. Look for Auburn to score at least 44 points, and that will be enough for the Tigers to cover the spread.
