The Old Dominion Monarchs will travel to Truist Field to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons this Friday night in College Football action.
The Old Dominion Monarchs didn’t play a game last season due to Covid-19 and will be hoping to improve on a 1-11 record in the 2019 season. Old Dominion struggled offensively in their last full season as the Monarchs averaged just 16.3 ppg on 273.8 total yards (176.4 rushing yds/g; 97.3 rushing yds/g). We currently don’t know who will be under center for Old Dominion as although head coach Ricky Rahne has announced that they have decided on their QB, that he won’t release his choice until prior to this game. Going into preseason, the battle for the starting QB position was between the trio of Stone Smartt, D.J. Mack Jr., or Hayden Wolff won the job. Old Dominion will have some experience on their offensive line and will hope that they can have a decent rushing attack with the duo of Elijah Davis & Blake Watson. Old Dominion will be returning TE Donta Anthony Jr. (7 rec, 45 yards) and hope to get solid production from WR’s Aaron Moore (26 rec, 389 yards 3 TD), Darius Savedge (11 rec, 144 yards), & Cornell Hendrick Jr. (5 rec, 34 yards).
Defensively, Old Dominion allowed their opponents to average 29.8 ppg on 371.1 total yards per game (223.5 passing yds/g; 147.6 rushing yds/g). Leading the way for the Monarchs defense will be their LB duo of Ryan Henry & Jordan Young.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons finished last season with an overall record of 4-5 while finishing ACC paly with a 3-4 record. Wake Forest did get invited to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, however, fell short of the victory after being defeated by the Wisconsin Badgers, 42-28. Offensively, Wake Forest averaged 32.8 ppg on 444.4 total yards per game (281.4 passing yds/g; 163.0 rushing yds/g). Wake Forest should have another outstanding offense this season led by QB Sam Hartman who completed 58.2% of his passes for 2224 yards, 13 TD, & 5 INT. The top receiving threats for the Demon Deacons will be Jaquarii Roberson (62 rec, 926 yards, 8 TD), Donavon Greene (29 rec, 582 yards, 2 TD), & Taylor Morin (32 rec, 405 yards, 3 TD). Leading the way for the Wake Forest backfield will be Christian Beal-Smith (142 att, 732 yards, 5 TD) & Michigan transfer Christian Turner.
Defensively, allowed their opponents to average 32.8 ppg on 435.7 total yards per game (252.3 passing yds/g; 183.3 rushing yds/g). Leading the way for the Demon Deacons defense this season will be tackle, Miles Fox who earned 3rd team All-Conference honors last season.
The Monarchs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games played in week 1. The Demon Deacons are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games at home.
Wake Forest struggled a bit on the defensive end last season, but a large part of that was due to some tough competition (Clemson, North Carolina, & NC State) and we don’t have to worry about an explosive offense with Old Dominion as they haven’t played a game in almost two year and don’t think we can expect to see Old Dominions offense to be much better than what we saw in 2019. Wake Forest has one of the better offenses in the ACC and between the fact that they should be able to put up plenty of points in this one and that the Demon Deacons have been strong ATS at home, I think Wake Forest wins this one by about 40 and covers this spread. Good Luck!
