The South Florida Bulls will travel to Carter-Finley Stadium to take on the NC State Wolfpack this Thursday night in College Football action.
The South Florida Bulls had a tough 2020 season as the Bulls went just 1-8 last season overall while finishing AAC play with an 0-7 record. Offensively, it was a struggle for the Bulls as they produced just 23.1 ppg on 365.3 total yards per game (216.6 passing yds/g; 148.8 rushing yds/g). QB Jordan McCloud is no longer with the program after transferring to Arizona State and announced last week that Cade Fortin, who saw limited time last season, will start the season under center for the Bulls. South Florida will have some solid experience returning in the passing game in the trio of Bryce Miller (33 rec, 327 yards, 3 TD), Latrell Williams (22 rec, 260 yards), & Mitchell Brinkman (15 rec, 161 yards, TD). Leading the way for the South Florida backfield will be Kelley Joiner (78 car, 368 yards, TD) & Darrian Felix (10 car, 25 yards).
Defensively, South Florida had no answers slowing down opponents last season as they allowed an average of 39.9 ppg which ranked 121st in College Football. South Florida brought in a bunch of transfers this season to hopefully help, however, this is still a team that is going to give up plenty of points this season.
The NC State Wolfpack had an impressive season last year, finishing the year with an overall record of 8-4, while finishing ACC play with a 7-3 record. NC State made it to the Taxslayer Gator Bowl, however, fell to the Kentucky Wildcats in a close 23-21 battle. Offensively, NC State averaged 30.2 ppg on 385.3 (262.2 passing yds/g; 122.5 rushing yds/g) total yards per game last season. Leading the way for the Wolfpack offense will be QB Devin Leary who completed 60.0% of his passes last season for 890 yards, 8 TD, & 2 INT before going down for the season with a broken leg. NC State brings back their top three WR’s from last year’s team in Emeka Emezie (47 rec, 738 yards, 5 TD), Thayer Thomas (42 rec, 529 yards, 6 TD, & Devin Carter (29 rec, 477 yards, 2 TD). Leading the way for the Wolfpack backfield this season with be Ricky Person Jr. who rushed for 643 yards & 4 TD on 147 carries.
Defensively, NC State will return 9 starters from a squad that allowed their opponents to an average of 29.2 ppg on 415 total yards per game (241.1 passing yds/g; 173.4 rushing yds/g) las season. Leading the way for the Wolfpack defense will be LB Payton Wilson who led the ACC last season with 10.8 tackles per game.
The Bulls are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games played in week 1 and just 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games played on a Thursday. The Wolfpack are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games at home.
South Florida was one of the worst teams in College Football last season and not much is expected to change this year as we should see both the offense and defense once again struggle. NC State did very well last season as a young team, especially after losing Devin Leary early in the season, and once again should be one of the better teams in the ACC as they return a bunch of starters and have solid depth. NC State went 5-1 at home last season and as I expect the Wolfpack to dominate South Florida on both ends of the field in this one, I think NC State does enough to cover this large spread. Good Luck!
