The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and UCLA Bruins face off on Saturday in Week 0 of the college football season at the Rose Bowl.
Todd Graham is back in charge of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and there is hope that this can be a strong season. Last season Hawaii was able to come away with a 5-4 record, including a win over Houston in the New Mexico Bowl. Hawaii is going to be led at quarterback by Chevan Cordeiro who threw for 2,083 yards, 14 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. On defense, Hawaii gave up yards, but they did a good job of creating turnovers, something that is going to be a key in this game. If Hawaii wants any chance to keep this game close, they are going to need to force some turnovers. The offense can find some success in this game, but the defense will need to help if they want to come away with the victory.
On the other side of this matchup is the UCLA Bruins who hope to take another step forward this season under Chip Kelly. Kelly’s offense is all about scoring, and last season they finally started to do that. Last season the Bruins were able to average 455 yards per game, and in this game it’s going to be important the offense gets going. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is back under center for the Bruins, and he showed some flashes of being a quarterback that could make a lot of noise in the Pac-12. This is also a team that has a strong running game. Tight end Greg Dulich is expected to be one of the top tight ends in the Pac 12, and he will be an x-factor in this game. On defense is where there are still plenty of questions surrounding this team. This is going to be a good test early for the Bruins defense.
In the first half, Hawaii is going to keep it close, but as the game goes on, I expect UCLA is going to pull away and win this game in blowout fashion. Back the UCLA Bruins to cover the spread. In terms of the total, I expect the over is going to have no issues hitting.
