The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be heading into the 2020 season hoping to see better results than the 2019 campaign. Georgia Tech finished the 2019 season with a record of (3-9) and an ACC record of (2-6),which placed them in the cellar of the Coastal division. The offense averaged a minuscule 16.7 points per game, which ranked 124th at the FBS level. The defense wasn’t much better, ranking 104th in points allowed. Georgia Tech allowed 32.4 points per game. The program is led by head coach Geoff Collins. Get College Football Predictions at Pick Dawgz.
The offense was led by freshman quarterback James Graham. Graham passed for 1,164 yards, while throwing 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. The quarterback also added 3 touchdowns and nearly 300 yards rushing. Georgia Tech will have the big piece in the backfield back for his junior season. Jordan Mason rushed for 899 yards and 7 touchdowns as a sophomore. Georgia Tech, who has a run first mentality, rushed 448 times for a total of 1,829 yards. The quarterbacks had just 269 passing attempts. Ahmarean Brown returns for the offense, after leading the team in receiving yards as a freshman. Brown collected 396 yards, while hauling in 21 receptions and 7 touchdowns.
Defensively, the team registered 17 sacks and 7 interceptions, but did force 11 fumbles. Ja’Quan Griffin had a team leading 2.5 sacks during the 2019 season. Defensive back Kaleb Oliver added 2 interceptions and 38 tackles. Tre Swilling added 10 passes defended as a sophomore.
Let us take a look at the Georgia Tech schedule for the 2020 season.
Sept. 3 Clemson
Sept. 12 Gardner-Webb
Sept. 18 UCF
Sept. 26 at North Carolina
Oct. 3 at Virginia Tech
Oct. 17 Virginia
Oct. 24 at Pitt
Oct. 31 at Syracuse
Nov. 7 Duke
Nov. 14 Notre Dame
Nov. 21 Miami
Nov. 28 at Georgia
Looking at the Georgia Tech non-conference schedule, the Yellow Jackets will play host to 3 of the 4 teams. Georgia Tech will host Gardner-Webb, UCF, and Notre Dame. Georgia Tech will wrap up the season on the road at Georgia. Georgia Tech will beat Gardner-Webb who struggled at the FCS level last season, winning just 3 games. Outside of that game, the chance that Georgia Tech wins another non-conference game is below average. When looking at the conference slate of games, there really aren’t many games that stand out. I could see Georgia Tech possibly winning towards the end of the season against Duke at home, other than that, not much stands out. Georgia Tech faces some good offenses. With a defense that gave up points at will last season and offense that primarily uses the ground, that does not mix well. I’ll take the under here.
