Hawaii faces Houston on Thursday, December 24th at Toyota Stadium for the New Mexico Bowl.
Hawaii is coming off a 38-21 win over UNLV in its last regular season game on December 12th at home. Hawaii was given an easy matchup with UNLV to get back to .500 and become bowl eligible, but the Rainbow Warriors will take any win they can get in this crazy year. Hawaii finished the regular season with a 4-4 record out of the Mountain West. Hawaii's biggest win of the year came against the Wolfpack of Nevada by the final score of 24-21 at home. Overall, this Hawaii team's offense was not as potent as we have seen in year's past. Cole McDonald was not the quarterback for the Bows for the first time since 2017, so there was certainly a learning curve there. Hawaii scores 26.0 points per game and earns 398.5 total yards of offense per contest as well. Hawaii also allows 29.3 points per game and concedes 421.5 total yards of offense as well.
Houston is coming off a 30-27 loss to Memphis in its last regular season game on December 12th. Houston trailed in that game by two scores late into the 4th quarter but was able to storm right back and tie the game with about a minute left in regulation. Memphis was given enough time to storm down the field itself and win the game on a game-winning field goal. Houston is now 3-4, as somehow the Cougars are still bowl eligible even with the under .500 record. Houston's three wins this season came against USF, Tulane, and Navy. Houston scores 32.3 points per game and earns 423.4 total yards of offense per contest as well. Houston allows 32.6 points per game and concedes 417.3 total yards of offense as well.
Houston opens as an 11.5-point favorite and the total is set at 61.5. I like Houston to win this game, but I do think that 11.5 is too many to lay here. Hawaii may not have its best team this year, but the Bows can certainly compete with many teams. I think Houston is one of those teams, and I think Hawaii catches a cover here.
