The Illinois Fighting Illini and Northwestern Wildcats face off on Saturday in a college football showdown at Ryan Field.
Illinois has shown some signs of progress this season, but they still haven’t been great this year and they currently sit with a 2-4 record. The two wins for Illinois did come in their last three games though. Illinois had knocked off Nebraska and Rutgers before losing their last game against Iowa. On the season Illinois is averaging 21.7 points per game while their defense is giving up 32.5 points per game. The offense has been inconsistent at best and in this game the offense is going to need to be better. Quarterback Brandon Peters has thrown for 408 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
On the other side of this matchup is the Northwestern Wildcats who had won four games in a row before losing their last game against Michigan State. This is a Northwestern defense that has been strong but in the last game they gave up 29 points and the offense couldn’t make up for it. On the season Northwestern is averaging 24.8 points per game while the defense is giving up 15.3 points per game. At quarterback, Northwestern is led by former Indiana Hoosiers player Peyton Ramsey and on the season he has thrown for 1,136 yards, eight touchdowns, and six interceptions. Ramsey needs to not turn the ball over in this game.
Illinois is 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 conference games. Northwestern is 1-5-2 against the spread in their last eight games played against teams with a losing record. Northwestern is 3-8-1 against the spread in their last 12 home games. The over is 8-2 in the last ten meetings between Illinois and Northwestern.
Northwestern plays down to it’s competition and that is going to be the case in this one. Illinois probably won’t do enough to win this game, but they are going to do enough to cover the spread. Back the Fighting Illini to cover the spread. IN terms o the spread it's a lean to the over but the strong play is with the side.
