The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders and Marshall Thundering Herd face off on Saturday in a college football showdown at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The Marshall Thundering Herd have been impressive this season winning each of their first six games of the season but each of the last two games they have failed to cover the spread. In the last game against UMass, Marshall was 44 point favorites but they only won by 41 points. Marshall’s offense has been strong, but the real strength has been the defense that is giving up only 9.5 points per game. The real strength has been against the rush giving up only on 66.8 yards per game on the ground. On offense, Marshall is led by Grant Wells who has thrown for 1,338 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions. In this game it’s going to be about the Marshall offense locking down again and making life touch on Middle Tennessee.
On the other side of this matchups is Middle Tennessee who got out to a slow start to the season but coming into this game they have won two of their last three games. In the last game. The Blue Raiders faced off with a Rice team that isn’t considered very good and they were able to come away with a victory.. Middle Tennessee’s offense has actually been pretty good most of the season, but it’s been the defense that has been a problem and let them down. Over the last three games, Middle Tennessee is averaging 36.8 points per game. Quarterback Asher O’Hara has had some growing pains but on the season he has thrown for 1,509 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Middle Tennessee is facing a very good defensive team and the Blue Raiders need to take good care of the ball.
The over is 7-1-1 in Middle Tennessee’s last nine games played on field turf. Middle Tennessee is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games in November. Marshall is 5-16 against the spread in their last 21 home games. The over is 6-2 in Marshall’s last eight games overall.
Marshall’s defense is elite but I still think Middle Tennessee is going to find a way to get their offense going enough. Marshall is going to win the game, but Middle Tennessee is going to cover the spread.
