The North Alabama Lions will travel to M. M. Roberts Stadium to take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.

The North Alabama Lions come into this game with an 0-2 record with their last game being a 24-17 loss to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 24-17, on October 17th. North Alabama led by a 17-14 margin late the 3rd quarter after a 11-yard TD reception by the Jaguars Jakobi Byrd however, the North Alabama offense struggled the rest of the way and couldn’t fight back after a 1-yard TD run by the Gamecocks Zerrick Coppers gave Jacksonville State the lead for good. North Alabama was outgained by Jacksonville State by a 389-276 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Lions was QB Blake Dever who completed 22 of 34 passes for 202 yards & 1 INT.

On the season, North Alabama is averaging 12.0 ppg on 261.5 total yards per game (198.5 passing yds/g; 63.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, the Lions have used two QB’s so far this season in Blake Dever (67.6 comp%, 230 yards, 1 INT) & Rett Files (64.0 comp %), 167 yards, TD, & 2 INT. Dever got the start in the last game for the Lions and also is more of a threat on the ground as he has 38 rushing yards on the season. The top receiving threats for the Lions have been Cortez Hall (11 rec, 87 yards), Corson Swan (5 rec, 63 yards), Andre Little (2 rec, 58 yards), and Jakobi Byrd (6 rec, 45 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Lions backfield has been Parker Driggers (11 att, 66 yards, 2 TD), Ja’Won Howell (14 att, 32 yards), and Ron Thompson (14 att, 23 yards).

Defensively, North Alabama is allowing their opponents to average 26.0 ppg on 373.0 total yards per game (175.5 passing yds/g; 197.5 rushing yds/g).

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 1-5 (1-2 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the Rice Owls, 30-6, this past Saturday. Southern Mississippi could not get anything going on the offensive end agianst the owls defense and could not fight back after Rice took a 23-6 lead into halftime. Southern Mississippi was outgained by Rice by a 412-269 margin and committed 3 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was RB Frank Gore Jr. who had 71 rushing yards on 11 carries.

On the season, Southern Mississippi is averaging 26.2 ppg on 382.2 total yards per game (247.0 passing yds/g; 135.2 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Southern Mississippi has been led by the RB trio of Frank Gore Jr. (72 att, 358 yards, TD), Kevin Perkins (31 att, 125 yards, 2 TD), and Darius Maberry (26 att, 108 yards, 2 TD). QB Jack Abraham has completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,224 yards, 7 TD, and 4 INT. The top receivers for the Golden Eagles have been Jason Brownlee (27 rec, 450 yards, 4 TD), Tim Jones (17 rec, 332 yards, 2 TD), and Demarcus Jones (24 rec, 222 yards, TD).

Defensively, Southern Mississippi is allowing their opponents to average 41.0 ppg on 484.7 total yards per game (273.3 passing yds/g; 211.3 rushing yds/g).

The Lions covered in their earlier game this season agianst the Liberty Flames as they were getting 33 points and lost by a 28-7 margin. The Golden Eagles 1-5 ATS on the season and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games.

North Alabama is part of the FCS and has only played two games this season, however, the Lions have been pretty impressive as they easily covered agianst Liberty, who is now in the top-25, and gave a very good Jacksonville State team a tough game. Southern Mississippi hasn't shown anything on the season, especially on the defensive end where they rank 95th in the county in scoring defense. North Alabama has played in a few weeks which is of some concern, however, I think this is just way too many points to give a Golden Eagles that just lost to Rice by 3+ TD’s. Take North Alabama and the points. Good Luck!
