The UMass Minutemen and Marshall Thundering Herd face off on Saturday in a college football showdown at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
It’s been a bit of an odd fall for Umass as they have only played one game, and they might have wished they wouldn’t have played it. In their only game of the season against Georgia Southern they gave up 41 points while they couldn’t find the end zone. In that game, Massachusetts only had 80 yards through the air and 111 yards on the ground. On defense, UMass couldn’t do much of anything giving up 229.6 yards through the air and almost 200 yards on the ground. In this game they are playing an even better team and moving the ball is going to be harder, but first they need to establish the run and try to slow down the game to keep Marshall off the field.
Marshall has found a whole lot of success this season winning five games and they covered the spread in four of them. On the season Marshall is averaging 33.8 points per game while the defense is giving up 9.4 points per game. On defense, Marshall is especially good against the run giving up 72 yards per game. At quarterback, the Thundering Herd are led by Mike Fallon who has been Grant Wells who has thrown for 1,110 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. Marshall is also averaging almost 200 yards per game on the ground. In this game if Marshall can get some playing time for reserves they will probably be feeling good about themselves.
UMass is 1-8 against the spread in their last nine games against the Conference USA. UMass is 3-10 against the spread in their last 13 games overall. The over is 22-7 in Marshall’s last 29 non-conference games. The over is 8-3 in Marshall’s 11 home games.
This number really couldn’t be big enough because UMass is not a good team. Marshall is going to run up the team, UMass is going to have no answer, and the Thundering Herd will win in blowout fashion. Back Marshall to win this game and cover the spread.
