The Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish face off on Saturday in a college football showdown at Notre Dame Stadium.
The Clemson Tigers have a perfect record but the story heading into this game is that Trevor Lawrence is out for this game because of COVID. In steps freshman D.J. Uiagalelei who has thrown for 444 yards and two touchdowns on the season. The quarterback issue is concerning, but the Tigers defense didn’t step up at all and help him out in the last game. Clemson fell behind big in the last game before chipping away and coming away with a victory against Boston College.Overall this season Clemson is giving up only 15.6 points per game and the defense is going to need to be a lot better in this game. Clemson also needs to control the game with their running game.
On the other side of this matchup is Notre Dame who comes into this game with a perfect record but in terms of talent, this is really their first test. In the last game against Georgia Tech, Notre Dame actually got out to a slow start, but the defense was strong giving up only 13 points total and that led to a victory. The offense has been good for Notre Dame but the real strength has been the defense giving up only 10.3 points per game. On offense Notre Dame has Ian Book under center and he has thrown for 1,224 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. Notre Dame is a run first team, rushing for 231 yards per game.
Clemson is 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 games overall. Clemson is 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games overall. The under is 9-3 in Notre Dame’s last 12 conference games. Notre Dame is 10-4-1 against the spread in their last 15 games against teams with winning records.
Clemson is still the better team without Lawrence but this is going to be a competitive game and it wouldn’t be shocking if Notre Dame pulled off the upset. Even if they can’t pull off the upset, look for Notre Dame to cover the spread.
