The Arkansas State Red Wolves and Appalachian State Mountaineers face off on Thursday night to kick off the college football week.
Arkansas State is an elite offensive team, but there defense has some issues that need to get cleaned up going forward. In the last game against Georgia State the Red Wolves put up 59 points, but their defense also gave up 52. In two of the last three games Arkansas State has given up 52 points. Arkansas State rotates series between their quarterbacks and it has worked to perfection. So far this season Logan Bonner has thrown 11 touchdowns, and Layne Hatcher has also thrown 10 touchdowns. In this game, Arkansas State needs to find a way to get the defense going because scoring might not be as easy to come by this week. Arkansas State’s defense is giving up 177 yards per game on the ground and it’s something that is going to need to be better.
On the other side of this matchup is Appalachian State who has only played three games so far this year winning two of them. The two wins though, haven’t really been against great teams, and the one loss was against Marshall, a game they only scored seven points against. All three games the Mountaineers have failed to cover the spread. In the last game against Campbell the offense got going putting up 52 points and that led to a victory. Quarterback Zac Thomas has thrown for 603 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Appalachian State’s offense is a run first team and coming into this game they are averaging 269.3 yards per game on the ground.
The over is 6-2 in Arkansas State’s last eight games played in October. Arkansas State is 5-11 against the spread against team’s with a losing record. Appalachian State is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games played in October.
Arkansas State might have a little more trouble scoring this week, but they are still going to find ways to put up points. Their defense also can’t slow down anyone, so there should be no shortage of scoring from Appalachian State. Look for both teams to run up the score in this game and for it go well over the total.
