The South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers face off on Saturday in an SEC showdown at Williams-Brice Stadium. The home team has won the last two games played between the two teams.
There is a lot of buzz surrounding this Tennessee football team coming into the season and the hope is that this is the year that Volunteers football is finally back. Last season Tennessee finished the season hot and the hope is they can build off the six-game winning streak. Jarrett Guarantano was benched a few times last season but he finished the season strong and the hope is he can lead the team to great success. Last season, Tennessee also had a strong defense that was ranked 23rd in the country and in this game they need the defense to step up again. If the defense is good again they should be in good shape.
On the other side of this matchup is the South Carolina Gamecocks who were the exact opposite of Tennessee last year and they finished really struggling losing five of the last six games. The starting quarterback is expected to be Collin HIll and last year he threw for 837 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the defensive side there are also a lot of question marks, but one of the real strengths is the secondary that is led by Israel Mukuamu and Jaycee Horn. in this game the Gamecocks need their defense to step up and make life tough on South Carolina.
The under is 9-3 in Tennessee’s last 12 games in September. The Volunteers are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight road games. The underdog is 8-0 against the spread in the last eight meetings between these two teams. The road team is 16-6-1 against the spread in the last 23 meetings between Tennessee and South Carolina.
On paper, Tennessee is the better team, but I think they have a fight on their hands. This is going to be a competitive game and South Carolina is going to do enough to cover the spread. In terms of the total it’s a lean to the under with both defenses stepping up.
