The Citadel Bulldogs will travel to Memorial Stadium to take on the top ranked Clemson Tigers this upcoming Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Citadel Bulldogs, of the Football Championship Subdivision, finished last season with a 6-6 overall record (4-4 Southern Conference). The Southern Conference decided to suspend their fall sports seasons, however, it is allowing its programs to play up to four non-conference games in the Fall which the Bulldogs are taking advantage of despite having over 30 of their players missing fall practice and losing the top rusher of the entire Southern Conference, Alex Ramsey, opt out of the season.
The Citadel kicked off their 2020 their four-game non-conference fall schedule with a 27-6 loss to the South Florida Bulls. The Bulldogs trailed by just a 7-6 margin midway through the 2nd quarter, however, could not take the lead and allowed South Florida to score 21 unanswered points through the reminder of the game. The Citadel was outgained by South Florida by a 404-284 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin. Leading the way for the Bulldogs triple-option attack was QB Brandon Rainey who completed 4 of 18 passes for 84 yards & 1 INT while also racking of 65 rushing yards on 20 carries. Raleigh Webb showed some explosiveness, rushing for 50 yards on two carries. The leading receivers for the Bulldogs was Ryan McCarthy (2 rec, 44 yards) and Keefe White (2 rec, 40 yards).
Defensively, The Citadel allowed their opponents to average 28.2 ppg last season on 374.2 total yards per game (159.6 rushing yds/g; 214.6 passing yds/g). Leading the way for the Bulldogs defense in their season opener was Willie Eubanks III who had 12 tackles and a sack.
The top-ranked Clemson Tigers kicked off their 2020 season with a convincing 37-13 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Clemson had no trouble finding the scoreboard early in this one and went into halftime with a commanding 27-20 lead. Clemson outgained Wake Forest by a 561-330 margin, however, did lose the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin in the victory.
Offensively, Clemson is coming off a 2019 season in which they averaged 43.9 ppg on 528.7 total yards per game (240.4 rushing yds/game; 288.3 passing yds/game) and could be even better coming into this season with the return of QB Trevor Lawrence & RB Travis Etienne. Trevor Lawrence completed 22 of 28 passes for 351 yards & accounted for 3 total TD’s, while Travis Etienne rushed for 102 yards and a TD in the victory agianst Wake Forest. Leading the way for the Clemson receivers were Amari Rodgers (5 rec, 90 yards), Braden Galloway (5 rec, 60 yards), and Joseph Ngata (3 rec, 48 yards).
Defensively, Clemson held their opponents to just an average of 13.5 ppg last season and looked dominant once again, despite allowed Wake Forest to score 10 points in the 4th quarter after the game was well out of hand. Leading the way for the Tigers defense was Myles Murphy who had 7 total tackles and 2 sacks.
The Citadel is not a terrible FCS team and can be a fun team to watch with their triple option offense attack, but there is obviously no question that they are way out of their league on the road agianst Clemson. The line is yet to be released, but we must expect that this going to be one of those games in which Clemson is favored between 40-50 points and it all depends on how many points the starters can put up before halftime. As Clemson really didn't pour it on agianst Wake Forest, I'm initially leaning on taking the massive amount of points, but it will need to at least 45-50. Please check back for my official pick once the line is released.
UPDATE: The line has been pushed up to 49 points and I'm going to take the points in this one. Good Luck.
