Georgia Tech faces Florida State on Saturday, September 12th at Doak Campbell Stadium for week two NCAA football action.
One great feature of a unique 2020 season is the fact that we can watch in-conference battles in week two of the college football season. Georgia Tech and Florida State are two teams that had disappointing seasons in 2019, and both will look to rebound this season.
Georgia Tech finished the 2019 campaign with a 3-9 record overall and a 2-6 conference record. Georgia Tech will return its starting quarterback in James Graham this season, but Graham did not have a great year in 2019. Graham had a 45.1% completion percentage, threw for 1,164 yards, and he had 12 passing touchdowns with seven interceptions. Graham is a mobile quarterback that usually has eight or more rushing attempts throughout the course of a game. Jordan Mason looks to be the starting running back for Georgia Tech heading into week two. Mason had 172 attempts with 899 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in 2019. Mason was fantastic with keeping the ball in his hands, as he did not have a single fumble in 2019. Geoff Collins enters his second year as head coach of Georgia Tech, and he will look for his Yellow Jackets to perform a lot better in 2020, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
The Florida State Seminoles did make a bowl game last year (Tiger Sun Bowl against Arizona State), but simply making a bowl is not what Florida State hopes for each season. Florida State went 6-6 during the regular season and lost the Tiger Sun Bowl to ASU to end the year under .500. Florida State's struggles started when the team was taken to overtime with UL Monroe; a game that Florida State barely survived. Florida State played two quarterbacks interchangeably in 2019, but James Blackman seems to be the lone starter heading into this season. Florida State will have to replace Cam Akers gave the team in the backfield, as he has moved on to the NFL (Los Angeles Rams). Mike Norvell will be entering his first year as Florida State's head coach.
I am going to take the Florida State Seminoles to win this game by at least two touchdowns. I think James Blackman is going to take the next step in his play, and I like the culture that Norvell brings to Florida State. I honestly believe that Willi Taggart held Florida State back a bit, and I think FSU will have a much better year in 2020.
