The Clemson Tigers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons face off on Saturday in an ACC showdown at BB&T Field. ESPN’s College Gameday will be broadcasting for this game.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons found success during the 2019 season finishing with eight wins and four of those came during conference play. Gone is quarterback Jamie Newman but the Demon Deacons shouldn’t be too worried about that as they have Sam Hartman who has been a great leader for the tema. Hartman is also going to have Sage Surratt who could very well end up being the best wide receiver in the country before this season is over.
Wake Forest’s defense isn’t elite but this is an experienced group with nine starters back from last year’s squad. The front seven should be a strong point for this team, but one problem for the team could be with the secondary which doesn't have the top two cover guys back. One area the defense had real success last season was getting into the backfield and wrecking havoc and if they can get to Trevor Lawrence here, that would go a long ways in keeping them in this game.
On the other side of the matchup is the Clemson Tigers who have expectations of winning the National title this year, and anything less would be disappointing. Last season the Tigers finished with only loss, but that came in the National title game. The Tigers did lose their co-offensive coordinator, but that shouldn’t mean they are going to take a step back. Trevor Lawrence could very well go down as one of the best college football players in history. In the backfield. Clemson also has running back Trevor Etienne who doesn’t get enough attention for how good he is.
The defense for the Tigers doesn’t get enough attention for how good they are. Because everything the offense does overshadows it. Leading tackler Isaiah Simmons is gone but it seems when one person leaves another one steps up.
There is no doubt that Clemson is the better team in this matchup, but Wake Forest has good quarterback play and they will find a way to stay in this game. Look for Wake Forest to cover the spread.
