The UTEP Miners and Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks face off on Saturday in their first college football game of the season at the Sun Bowl.
Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks is an FCS level team and last season was another disappointing season finishing with three wins and nine losses. All three of those wins by the Lumberjacks last season came duringSouthland conference play.
Even with all the struggles, they were able to win two of the last three games and the hope to build off that this season. In the last game of the season against Northwestern State the offense was good putting up 32 points and that led to the victory. Last season, the Lumberjacks averaged 24.08 points per game while the defense gave up 34.92 points per game. One of the good things for Stephen F. Austin is they will have their quarterback back from last season. Trae Self had success throwing for 2,550 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. On the defensive side there were some major struggles last season and there really hasn’t been a whole lot of indiction that they will find some success this season on that side of the ball.
On the other side of this matchup is the UTEP Miners who were bad last season winning only 1 of their 12 games. UTEP opened last season with a two point win over Houston Baptist, but couldn’t come out on top in any other games. The offense and defense were both terrible, and it’s really hard to determine what side of the ball is worse. One of the big questions for UTEP is who will be under center but all signs point towards Brandon Jones getting that job and although he wasn’t a full time starter last year, he did gain some valuable experience.
UTEP only had one one win last year and it was only by two points. It’s a new year, but there isn’t much trust they are going to be better this year. Look for the Lumberjacks to make the plays at the end of the game to pull off the upset.
