The Army Black Knights and Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders face off on Saturday in a non conference showdown at the Blaik Field at Michie Stadium. This is the first meeting between the two teams.
The Army Black Knights had high expectations heading into the 2019 season but they didn’t live up to those expectations. Last season Army finished with only five wins and they finished the season with a blowout 31-7 loss against the Navy Midshipmen. For Army the first thing that needs to happen is they need to find a replacement at starting quarterback with Kelvin Hopkins Jr. gone. Unless something changes before gametime, Christian Anderson Jr should get that job. In that game against Navy in 2019, Anderson had 21 attempts. Army still runs the option attack and this is a game where they will try to keep the ball on the ground.
On defense last season the Black Knights gave up 23 points per game and opposing teams averaged 299 yards per game. In this game the Black Knights need to control the tempo of the game and take time away from the Blue Raiders.
On the other side of this matchup is the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders who finished last season with only four wins, and that is very disappointing for a team that was good for so long. To finish the season the Blue Raiders only won one of their last four games, and in three of those games they were favorites. Last season Middle Tennessee used two quarterbacks Chase Cunningham and Asher O'Hara who will both be back this season.
Last season Middle Tennessee averaged 26.33 points per game while the defense gave up 29.92 points. Last season the Blue Raiders gave up 128 yards per game on the ground, and that rushing defense is going to be the key.
The over is 7-2-1 in Middle Tennessee’s last 10 road games. The under is 8-3-1 in the Blue Raiders last 12 games in September. The Black Knights are 2-6 in their last eight games against C-USA. The under is 7-3-1 in Army’s last 11 games in September.
With the way Army performed last year there is no way to trust them laying this type of number against a Middle Tennessee team that has some experience under center. Look for Middle Tennessee to find offensive success and cover the spread. Don’t be shocked if the Blue Raiders win this game outright.
