The Virginia Tech Hokies are on the road for an ACC matchup with the Pittsburgh Panthers on November 6, 2020. Virginia Tech finished the 2019 season with a record of (8-5), while Pittsburgh also went (8-5). The two teams met last season, as Virginia Tech routed Pittsburgh to a tune of 28-0. Let’s take a closer look at both programs for this 2020 matchup. Get College Football predictions at Pick Dawgz.
The Virginia Tech offense will be looking to catch stride in this contest, as quarterback Hendon Hooker will be looking to mirror his performance from the meeting last season against Pittsburgh. Hendon passed for 153 yards, while completing 10 of 13 passes and added 2 touchdowns. Overall, Hendon passed for more than 1,500 yards on the season and collected 13 passing touchdowns. Wideout Tre Turner was the number one target for Hokies quarterbacks last season, as he reeled in 34 receptions for over 550 yards and 4 scores. A lot of the success last season was led by the defense, as the defense proved they could get to the opposing quarterback consistently. In the game last season against Pittsburgh, the Virginia Tech defense held the Panthers to just 177 yards of offense. For more on Pittsburgh, check out the team preview.
It's clear Pittsburgh will be looking for a redemption game in this spot, after Virginia Tech shut out the Panthers a year ago. Pittsburgh welcomes back quarterback Kenny Pickett for the 2020 season. Pickett had a pretty good year last season, minus the game against the Hokies. Pickett was just 10 of 26 passing for 103 yards. The Panthers had one of the best pass rushing attacks last season, as Pittsburgh registered 51 sacks. For more on Pittsburgh, check out the team preview.
Overview: The oddsmakers have pegged Pittsburgh as a small 1 point favorite in this home ACC contest. While Virginia Tech did have Pittsburgh’s number last season, I look for coach Pat Narduzzi to get the team ready for this redemption game. Pittsburgh has a lot of returning talent for the 2020 season, as does Virginia Tech. I like for both of these programs to outperform the projected win total, but Pittsburgh has the edge in this one, as this is a home game for Pittsburgh. This should be a fun game against two of the better teams in the ACC for 2020, but I’ll side with Pittsburgh to cover this small spread at home.
