The Clemson Tigers hit the road for a non-conference clash with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Clemson is coming off a 2019 season that saw the program finish with a (14-1) record, while Notre Dame went (11-2). Let’s take a closer look at both programs. Get College Football predictions at Pick Dawgz.
The Clemson Tigers will be led throughout the 2020 season by quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence passed for more than 3,600 yards a season ago, while also tossing 36 touchdowns. Not only does Lawrence return, but the running game shouldn’t lose a beat from last season. Travis Etienne is back for his senior year and will be instrumental in this non-conference game, to help give the Tigers a balanced offensive effort. Etienne rushed for over 1,600 yards and added 18 touchdowns on the ground. He will be looking to up his draft stock and a game against Notre Dame on the road is a great place to do that. Notre Dame will have an experienced quarterback back for the 2020 season just like Clemson. The Fighting Irish welcome back Ian Book. Book passed for more than 3,000 yards during the 2019 campaign, while tossing two fewer touchdowns than Trevor Lawrence. While the program does return Book, his pass catchers will be in question. Notre Dame lost three of their key wideouts from an 11 win 2019 team. The defense should be just fine throughout the 2020 season and will be able to keep the offense in games, that is if the offense struggles here and there. Overview: The oddsmakers have pegged Clemson as nearly a 7 point favorite for this non-conference clash. Both teams welcome back premier quarterbacks for 2020, but it is the other skill players that separate these two programs. Clemson has more weapons on offense, as Etienne will be looking to up his stock to hopefully be a 1st round draft pick in the 2021 NFL draft. While Notre Dame should still be able to make a bowl game this season, there are too many variables that have yet to be put in place for the Fighting Irish on offense. I’ll side with Clemson to cover this spread on the road, as the Tigers should have another elite season in the college ranks.
