The Utah Utes play host to the USC Trojans on October 2nd at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, UT. Utah is coming off of a 2019 campaign that saw the program finish (11-3) and sit atop the Pac-12 South. USC finished 2nd in the Pac-12 behind Utah, going (8-5) overall. Utah fell on the road to USC last season, 30-23. It was the first conference game of the season and the only loss Utah would see in Pac-12 play. Let’s take a closer look at both these teams. USC will welcome back starting quarterback Kedon Slovis. Slovis will be looking to build off of an impressive sophomore season. The quarterback passed for more than 3,500 yards, while throwing 30 touchdowns. USC will need to overcome the loss of star wideout Michael Pittman Jr. He totaled over 1,200 yards receiving. SLovis only attempted 2 passes in the game last season against Utah, completing both of them. The defense will need to see an improved season from Drake Jackson, as the defense lost John Houston Jr. For more on USC, check out the team preview.
Unlike USC, Utah will have a different quarterback under center for the 2020 campaign. Utah will have to overcome the loss of Tyler Huntley in this contest. One player that has a chance to take over the reins is Jake Bentley, a transfer from South Carolina. The Utes will also be a tad weak in the backfield, as Utah also lost their starting running back from a season ago. The offense will for sure look different for the 2020 campaign. The offense will need more than a couple players to step up if the program wants to mirror their 32.3 points per contest that was seen during the 2019 season. If the offense can’t mirror the 2019 image, the program has hope in the defense turning in another outstanding campaign. For more on Utah, check out the team preview.
Overview: USC has opened as a small 2.5 point favorite on the road. The odds makers took notice to Utah having to replace their quarterback and running back from a season ago. This game is at Utah, which is a plus for the Utes. However, the Trojans return the key pieces to this team that should make this offense go. USC will need to be perfect on the road here, but they do have the experience to get it done. I’ll take USC to cover on the road, as their experience will be enough to get it done.
