Breaking Down the Florida Atlantic Owls Win Total
2020 College Football Season
Florida Atlantic: O/U 7.5 Wins -- Title Odds:
The Florida Atlantic Owls will be looking to mirror their 1st place finish from the 2019 season. Florida Atlantic finished the 2019 campaign with an overall record of (11-3), while going (7-1) in C-USA play. The offense averaged 36.4 points per contest, which ranked 14th at the FBS level. The defense allowed an average of 22.7 points per contest. The program is under the direction of Willie Taggart. Taggart takes over for Lane Kiffin.
The offense was guided by quarterback Chris Robinson. Robinson passed for 3,701 yards, while throwing 28 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He will be entering his junior season. The backfield was and should be controlled again by Malcolm Davidson. Davidson rushed for 711 yards and 9 touchdowns as a freshman. Florida Atalntic used multiple running backs often last season, as there were 4 different running backs that had at least 5 rushing scores. Larry McCammon III contributed 7 scores on the ground. He will also return for the 2020 season. Tight End Harrison Bryant had a team high in receptions and receiving yards. Bryant hauled in 65 receptions for 1,004 yards, and 7 scores. However, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. Wideout DeAngelo Antoine graduated last season, after posting 5 scores and 771 yards receiving. Willie Wright will be looked at to step up this season, as the program lost their top 4 receivers from a season ago. Wright had 20 receptions for 186 yards receiving and 2 scores last year.
As a team the defense registered 34 sacks, 22 interceptions, while recovering 11 of 14 forced fumbles. The defense was led by linebacker Rashad Smith. Smith had a team high 109 tackles, but is now part of the Chicago Bears. Linebacker Akileis Leroy is back, after being second on the team in tackles with 101. Leroy also had a team high 7.5 sacks, he enters his senior year during 2020. The secondary should be paced by safety Zyon Gilbert. Gilbert recorded 8 pass break ups and 2 interceptions. The secondary will be looking for others to fill voids, as 4 defensive backs will not return this season.
Let us take a look at the Florida Atlantic schedule for the 2020 season.
Sept. 3 at Minnesota
Sept. 12 Stony Brook
Sept. 19 at Georgia Southern
Sept. 26 USF
Oct. 3 Charlotte
Oct. 10 at Southern Miss
Oct. 24 at Marshall
Oct. 31 UTSA
Nov. 7 WKU
Nov. 14 at FIU
Nov. 21 Old Dominion
Nov. 28 at Middle Tennessee
The Owls open the season against Big Ten member Minnesota. Florida Atlantic will return home to play host to Stony Brook, a member from the FCS level. The rest of the non-conference schedule features a road game against Georgia Southern and a home contest with South Florida.
The projected win total is set at 7.5 wins. Florida Atlantic has an above average chance to start the season with a 3-1 record, with all four of those games being non-conference matchups. Coach Taggart will look to have his team prepared for a C-USA slate that starts out with a home game against Charlotte. Florida Atlantic should be competing for another 1st place finish, as the program doesn’t even face UAB or Louisiana Tech, the two teams that finished 1 and 2 respectively in the West division. While the defense is likely to regress, with the team having had quite a few seniors last season, the offensive passing game should still find success often. The offense returns an experienced quarterback in Chris Robinson. While Robinson lost almost all his targets from a season ago, look for his strong quarterback skills help the younger wideouts burst onto the scene. The backfield will still be strong and will help balance this offense. I’m taking Florida Atlantic to cash the over on this win total for 2020.
