The Charlotte 49ers will be looking to build off of their 2019 season. Charlotte polished off their 2019 season with an impressive finish, winning 5 straight to end the season. The program was 2-5 on October 19th. Charlotte finished the 2019 captain with an overall record of (7-6),while going (5-3) during C-USA play. The offense averaged 29.8 points per contest, which rnaked 59th at the FBS level. The defense allowed an average of 32.4 points per contest, which ranked in the bottom 30. The program is under the direction of Will Healy.
The offense was guided by quarterback Chase Reynolds. Reynolds passed for 2,564 yards, while throwing for 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for nearly 800 yards and 7 scores. The quarterback will be entering his junior season. The backfield was paced by Benny LeMay. LeMay rushed for over 1,000 yards, while adding 9 touchdowns. LeMay signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns. Aaron McAllister looks to see an increase in playing time with the departure of LeMay. McAllister rushed for 380 yards and 5 touchdowns during the 2019 season. Victor Tucker had a team high 909 receiving yards, while hauling 52 receptions and 7 touchdowns. Tucker returns for a junior year. Tyler Ringwood will be entering his senior season, after adding 5 touchdowns as a wideout during the 2019 campaign.
As a team the defense was led by defensive back Marquavis Gibbs. Gibbs had a team leading 103 tackles, while also adding 4 pass break ups and 1 interception. However, Gibbs was a senior last season. The defense as a whole totaled 36 sacks, while recording 9 interceptions. The defense will have to overcome a huge loss in their pass rush. Alex Highsmith registered 14 sacks, which helped him get drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 3rd round. Linebacker Markees Watts returns for the 2020 campaign, after collecting 9.5 sacks as a sophomore. Defensive back Jacione Fugate is back for his senior season. Fugate recorded 4 pass break ups and 69 tackles last season. The secondary also saw Marquil Osborne move on due to graduation.
Let us take a look at the Charlotte schedule for the 2020 season.
Sept. 5 at Tennessee
Sept. 12 Norfolk State
Sept. 17 at Duke
Sept. 26 Georgia State
Oct. 3 at Florida Atlantic
Oct. 10 at North Texas
Oct. 17 FIU
Oct. 24 UTEP
Nov. 7 at Middle Tennessee
Nov. 14 Old Dominion
Nov. 21 at Marshall
Nov. 28 WKU
The 49ers open the season on the road against SEC member Tennessee. Charlotte will then play host to Norfolk State, before hitting the road for a matchup with Duke. The last non-conference matchup is a home contest against Georgia State.
The projected win total is set at 5 wins. Charlotte will play both UTEP and Old Dominion at home. Both programs combined to go 2-22 during the 2019 season. Charlotte returns dual threat quarterback Chase Reynolds who performed well last season. Reynolds should be able to keep the 49ers in games, by keeping opposing teams off balanced with his throwing ability and with his rushing skills. Charlotte should go 2-2 in non-conference play, which would leave just 3 wins needed in conference play to at least push the win total. There is no reason Charlotte should not beat both UTEP and Old Dominion. This would leave just 1 more win needed for Charlotte to at least push. Charlotte has multiple winnable games left throughout their schedule, therefore I’m taking the over. I look for Charlotte to cover this win total, finishing 6-6, with another invitation to a bowl game.
