The Auburn Tigers will be looking to build to keep up their success for the 2020 campaign.  Auburn finished the 2019 season with an overall record of (9-4), while going (5-3) in SEC play.  The offense averaged 33.2 points per game, which ranked 28th at the FBS level.  The defense allowed an average of 19.5 per game.  The Auburn defense was in the top 20, for fewest points allowed per contest.  The program is under the direction of Gus Malzahn.

The offense was led by quarterback Bo Nix.  Nix passed for 2,542 yards, while throwing 16 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.  The quarterback was just a freshman, as he will be looking to build off his young season.  He also added 7 rushing scores.  JaTarvious Whitlow rushed for 763 yards and 10 touchdowns.  Whitlow will be entering his junior year during the 2020 campaign.  Wideout Seth Williams hauled in 59 receptions for 830 yards and 8 touchdowns, while Anthony Schwartz reeled in 41 receptions for 440 yards and 1 score.  Both wideouts return for the 2020 season.

As a team the defense collected 28 sacks, 10 interceptions, and recovered 13 of their 15 forced fumbles.  The defense was guided by defensive back Jeremiah Dinson.  Dinson had a team high 88 tackles, while adding 2 interceptions.  However, Dinson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions.  The defense will also have to overcome the loss of defensive end Marlon Davidson.  Davidson was drafted in the 2nd round by the Atlanta Falcons, after registering 7.5 sacks and 49 tackles during the 2019 season.  Defensive back Roger McCreary had a team reading 11 pass break ups as a sophomore.  Zakoby McClain collected 1 interception, while forcing 3 fumbles as a sophomore.  Both McCreary and McClain are back for the 2020 campaign.

Let us take a look at the Auburn schedule for the 2020 season.

Sept. 5 Alcorn State

Sept. 12 North Carolina (in Atlanta)

Sept. 19 at Ole Miss

Sept. 26 Southern Miss

Oct. 3 Kentucky

Oct. 10 at Georgia

Oct. 17 Texas A&M

Oct. 31 at Mississippi State

Nov. 7 Arkansas

Nov. 14 UMass

Nov. 21 LSU

Nov. 28 at Alabama

The Tigers open the season with two straight non-conference matchups.  Those games feature Alcorn State and North Carolina.  The rest of the non-conference slate are against the likes of Southern Mississippi and UMass.

The projected win total is set at 9 wins.  Auburn should no doubt go undefeated in non-conference play, which would mean at least 4 wins on the season.  The Tigers do avoid having to face Florida during the 2020 campaign.  Auburn has 4 road games during SEC play.  At worst Auburn should go 2-2 during those 4 games, with wins over Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Coach Malzahn will see his team face Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Arkansas at home.  The Auburn program should add 3 more wins to the win column after playing those programs.

Auburn returns a ton of talent on the offense side, as the program had a lot of underclassmen gain plenty of valuable experience during the 2019 season.  Auburn should at least push this win total, with the key game coming towards the end of the season.  The Tigers end the 2020 campaign with a home game against LSU and a road contest at Alabama. Let’s throw the Alabama game out at this point.  If Auburn takes care of business in the rest of their games, which should result in wins, outside of the Georgia game, Auburn would need to beat LSU to cash this win total.  LSU will obviously be transitioning a new quarterback under center for 2020, after Joe Burrow was drafted as the 1st overall pick. Auburn will be at home and will be well experienced by this point in the season.  You can bet that coach Gus Malzahn will have his team hyped up and ready to go for a home contest against LSU.  I’m going to give Auburn a win here, as Auburn returns more than enough talent to compete for the top spot in the SEC West.  I’m taking the over on the win total for Auburn, as I look for Auburn to be one of the premier teams in the country, as Bo Nixon showed a lot of promise as a freshman a year ago.
