The FIU Panthers will be looking to improve from the 2019 season, after finishing 2nd to last in the East division.  FIU finished the 2019 season with an overall record of (6-7), while going (3-5) in C-USA play.  The offense averaged 26.5 points per game, which ranked 83rd at the FBS level.  The defense allowed 27.2 points per game.  The program is under the direction of Butch Davis.

The offense was guided by quarterback James Morgan.  Morgan passed for 2,560 yards, while throwing 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.  Morgan was drafted in the 4th round by the New York Jets.  Kaylan Wiggins will try and win the starting job during the offseason.  The backfield will have a hole as well, as both Anthony Jones and Napoleon Maxwell moved onto the NFL.  Both running backs rushed for over 650 yards, while each collected 9 rushing scores.  Shemar Thornton hauled in 51 receptions for 668 yards and 5 touchdowns.  He returns for his senior campaign.

As a team the defense collected 21 sacks and 12 interceptions.  The defense was led by linebacker SageLewis.  Lewis had a team high 93 tackles, while also adding 3 interceptions.  However, he was a senior during the 2019 season.  Alexy Jean-Baptiste is looking to build off of a 2019 season that saw him finish with 4.5 sacks.  Rishard Dames paced the secondary with 5 pass break ups and 4 interceptions during the 2019 campaign.  Dames will be looking to make it tough on quarterbacks for his senior year.

Let us take a look at the FIU schedule for the 2020 season.

Sept. 3 Jacksonville State

Sept. 12 at UCF

Sept. 19 at Old Dominion

Sept. 26 at Liberty

Oct. 10 Middle Tennessee

Oct. 17 at Charlotte

Oct. 24 at UMass

Oct. 31 Marshall

Nov. 7 at UTEP

Nov. 14 Florida Atlantic

Nov. 21 at WKU

Nov. 28 Louisiana Tech

The Panthers open the season against FCS member Jacksonville State.  The Rest of the non-conference schedule features road games at UCF, Liberty, and UMass.

The projected win total is set at 6 wins.  Florida International should secure a win to open the season against Jacksonville State.  Jacksonville State has been one of the premier teams at the FCS level over the last 10 years or so, but struggled last season.  FIU has winnable games on their schedule, but not knowing how the offense will shake out, I’m going to side with the under.  The offense will be transitioning a new quarterback, while also looking to replace their two running backs from last season.  A lot of the offense has departed, which Coach Davis will be looking for some other guys to step up.  While I am taking the under, a push is very possible, as Florida International has more than a couple very winnable games against teams that struggled last season.
