The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will be looking to build off a 3rd place finishing the ACC Atlantic Division. Wake Forest finished the 2019 season with an overall record of (8-5), while going (4-4) in ACC play. The offense averaged 31.8 points per contest, which ranked 42md at the FBS level. The defense allowed an average of 29.1 pergame. The program is under the direction of Dave Clawson.
The offense was guided by quarterback Jamie Newman. However, Newman was a senior a season ago. The senior passed for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Sam Hartman looks to be the guy that will be under center during the 2020 season. Hartman has thrown 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and nearly 3,000 yards, during parts of 2 seasons. The backfied was led by Cade Carney, but he graduated after the 2019 campaign. Kenneth Walker III looks to have an increased role for the 2020 season. Walker rushed for 579 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wake Forest will have one of their two wideouts that surpassed 1,000 yards receiving return for the 2020 season. Sage Surratt hauled in 66 receptions for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns.
As a team the defense collected 31 sacks and 14 interceptions. The defense was paced by sophomore linebacker Ryan Smenda Jr. The linebacker led the team in tackles with 81, while contributing 2.5 sacks. Carlos Basham Jr. led the defense in sacks with 11. He returns for his senior season. Amari Henderson was the leader in the secondary, but he was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Nasir Greer will be looking to build off of a 2019 season, where he had 4 pass break ups and 3 forced fumbles.
Let us take a look at the Wake Forest schedule for the 2020 season.
Sept. 5 at Old Dominion
Sept. 11 Appalachian State
Sept. 19 Villanova
Sept. 26 Notre Dame (in Charlotte)
Oct. 3 at Duke
Oct. 9 Miami
Oct. 17 at Florida State
Oct. 31 at NC State
Nov. 7 Syracuse
Nov. 14 at Louisville
Nov. 21 Clemson
Nov. 28 Boston College
The Demon Deacons open their season with four straight non-conference games. Their non-conference slate features a road game at Old Dominion, before three straight home games. The home contests are against: Appalachian State, Villanova, and Notre Dame.
The projected win total is set at 5 wins. Wake Forest has the possibility to regress, after the departure of star quarterback Jamie Newman. The Demon Deacons should open the season with a win over Old Dominion. Wake Forest will then head home to face Appalachian State. Appalachian State seems to have a solid team year in and year out. Wake Forest will lose to Appalachian State, before winning against Villanova. A 2-2 record in non-conference play is respectable, after a loss to Notre Dame.
Wake Forest escapes some pressure during ACC play, as the Demon Deacons play just 2 of the 6 teams that finished with a winning record. The program has plenty of winnable contests in ACC play, while seeing some of their easier ACC games on the road. Sam Hartman has experience under center and should be able to hold his own for a full season. I’m going to take the over of 5 wins, as a 7-5 record seems appropriate, with an opportunity for a bowl game.
